Troost Market Collective is a non-profit organization driven to create equitable economic opportunity for creative entrepreneurs, inspiring future generations through innovative partnerships and programming. At this event, co-founder and board member Katie Mabry van Dieren, will provide a brief introduction of the organization and its focuses, including Troost Avenue’s history, current efforts and campaigns, and future planning in conjunction with members from the community.
We will then examine one of the group’s campaigns, the 31 Linwood & Troost Mural Project, created alongside the community to amplify those voices within it. Integral to the process, artists and community members shared what the past and future of Troost looks like to them while those buildings Troost Market Collective will inhabit are in transition. These murals give voice to action and community strength by highlighting the beauty and inspiration in the surrounding neighborhood and buildings.
As you stroll through the historic Firestone building for a viewing and artist talk, attendees will learn all about the group’s inspiration, as well as its love for the community. The gallery will also feature a showing of Six Streets, the KCPT Documentary on the Black Lives Matter Street Murals completed in September 2020. After you’ve watched, listened, and learned, we highly suggest grabbing lunch at nearby Ruby Jean’s. This establishment along Troost is an outstanding example of community stewardship.
This is an in-person event. Attendees will be required to show proof of vaccination, along with proof of identification.
KC Design Week will also be observing all mask mandates from the CDC and in Kansas City, MO, where all of the events will be held.
Additional information regarding general event information and check-in process will be emailed directed to registrants 24 hours before the event.
