Beauty Is Born From Struggle; and the Struggle Is the Art

A Discussion with Matt Castilleja

For any product hoping to enter the boutique, high-end furniture market, it must be absolutely beautiful for starters, then it must be built with exacting precision and quality not found in anything else available in the larger markets. And to top it off, it must have meaning beyond that which was just described.

A couple random events over the past two years nearly brought three decades of work all to a quick end.

Furniture designer and builder Matt Castilleja will share his story and a lesson on staying calm in the face of calamity, digging deep to find resilience through despair, and working against the ticking clock.

“If anything, perhaps what I've learned in the past few years could help somebody navigate challenges they're facing or give some encouragement to those who may feel their dreams are too far fetched.”  ~ Matt Castilleja

Today, Matt Castilleja’s furniture designs are regularly featured in projects printed on the pages of Architectural DigestElle Décor, and Gallerie Magazine, and he works closely with top AD100 designers across the country.

Castilleja Studio

Located in Kansas City’s River Market, Castilleja Studio is home to a group of individuals dedicated to developing the product through a thoughtful process. Every object and piece of furniture is deeply inspired by ancient methods and reimagined through a contemporary lens. Pure materials combined with passionate methods allow each piece to encompass simplicity and functionality at its highest standard.

After four years of an unpaid internship, Matt’s mentor decided to retire and gift the apprentice all of his machinery and collection of materials as back pay.

Having honed traditional furniture making techniques over the subsequent years, the focus of Castilleja Studio has developed into contemporary sculptural and elemental furniture with a singular design style that references the past, yet feels firmly rooted in the present.

Today, the studio has evolved into a team of skilled furniture makers, product development, and outreach. Operating with a larger crew has allowed the Castilleja name to be represented throughout the country through private clientele and exclusive showrooms.
