On April 4th, 2017, Kansas City, MO residents had the opportunity to vote for funding for a new animal shelter, along with other city improvements. With an overwhelming majority, it was approved and the vision for the KC Campus for Animal Care and KC Pet Project began. Led by Parris Communications and the tireless team at KC Pet Project, Willoughby Design and HNTB worked in collaboration with Grand Construction and numerous other generous partners to help KCCAC open its doors in January 2020. The Pathway To A Forever Home reveals how this state-of-the-art facility became the lifesaving answer for Kansas City’s homeless pets.
This is a donation-based event. Attendees will be asked to bring an item from KC Pet Project’s wish list.
This is an in-person event. Attendees will be required to show proof of vaccination, along with proof of identification.
KC Design Week will also be observing all mask mandates from the CDC and in Kansas City, MO, where all of the events will be held.

Katie believes that a strong relationship with each client leads to the best possible outcome for every project. She enjoys the challenge of organizing diverse teams to meet the unique needs of complex projects and schedules. In her role as Interior Architecture Practice Leader, Katie provides oversight and guidance at all phases of projects from programming through project completion.
Katie’s diverse portfolio includes professional and collegiate sports venues, athletic training facilities, government campuses, local and national corporate offices, and aviation terminals. Katie’s passion for the industry is shown in her long-time involvement with Leading the Way, a mentorship group for young professionals within IIDA Mid-America.
Katie graduated from the University of Kansas with a Bachelor of Fine Arts, Interior Design. She is an avid animal lover who grew up on a farm with nearly every animal of the 4-legged variety. She has a dog and cat, in addition to son, daughter, and husband who are continually wondering what the next design project will be at home.
Willoughby Design Principal and Chief Creative Officer, Nicole Satterwhite is the cornerstone of Willoughby’s world-class design team. She is adept at creating brand identities and translating them into numerous energetic and engaging touchpoints, all designed as thoughtful, consistent extensions from the original concept. She has received numerous awards for her design work and been featured in publications such as Communication Arts, Print and Graphics. She was a founding board member of ArtsAlive and has been an instructor at the Kansas City Art Institute.
While at Willoughby, Nicole has worked in categories as varied as fashion, consumer packaged goods, restaurant, healthcare and is instrumental in all of our civic projects, from airports to streetcars to animal shelters. Nicole can see the big picture before most people have had their coffee. When not managing Willoughby’s design process, she manages a household of two kids, an architect and a big dog.
Whether infusing new energy to help brands compete in the ever-changing marketplace or creating new brands from the ground up, Willoughby Design Principal and CEO, Megan Stephens specializes in framing the challenge, envisioning possibilities, developing ideas and then working with the design teams to bring them to life.
Forever Kansas City loyal, Megan is especially proud of Willoughby’s role in the rejuvenation of several civic projects including the Visit KC and KC Chamber brand rejuvenation and the regional unification of five bi-state transit systems under one brand, RideKC. Willoughby’s lead role in the branding of the KC Streetcar was a mission of love, determination and facing down a committee that wanted to paint it red. The construction campaign for the new terminal at KCI is the latest in a long string of KC projects.
Megan is a regular speaker and judge for groups including AAF, Design Week, AIGA, Marketing to Women Conference, the Central Exchange, special interest groups and university classes. She was a founding Steering Committee member for win|win, a Kansas City initiative to raise awareness around the business advantage of women on boards and is an advocate for women and parents in the workplace. After putting her female perspective to work all day at Willoughby, she’s just one of the boys at home with her husband, two sons and beloved pups, Gordon and Lou.
