From the River
Presented by Urban Lab KC
Kansas City began along the banks of the Missouri River in the 19th century, cutting its way south through the hills of the present River Market district, and rose to prominence through the industrial engine of the West Bottoms, thanks to the Hannibal Bridge and the workforces of Kansas City, Kansas. This early urban development fueled what became Downtown proper, which created the gothic mansions of Quality Hill and the Romanesque towers and shops of the Junction. Threading this patchwork together was a complex web of transportation that moved people with all manner of innovative devices, from streetcars and cable cars to funiculars and tunnels. This presentation will explore the architectural and industrial environment that defined this transitional moment in the city’s history, in the booming years leading up to the flood of 1903 and beyond, when everything changed.
